A little knowledge goes a long way
Why donating useful things matters
A well-matched donation can do more than make space in your home.
Help make another home work
A table is a place to share meals and do homework. A dresser provides everyday storage. When a furniture bank accepts useful goods, those pieces can help people establish a home without buying everything new. Household Goods describes furnishing homes free of charge for people who need that support.

Keep useful materials working
Reuse extends the working life of an item. A sound bookcase that changes hands can continue to serve a purpose rather than immediately entering the disposal stream. That is a practical reason to explore reuse before recycling or disposal. Wellesley’s RDF promotes reduction, reuse and recycling as distinct steps.

Make your next transition easier
Sorting early gives you more time to find the right recipient, check acceptance and plan transport. It also makes it easier to identify the pieces you want to keep before a move. A calmer plan can be as simple as one room, one inventory and one confirmed destination at a time.
Give what is useful—not a disposal problem
Charities have limited storage, staff and current needs. A declined item is not a judgment about your intentions. Respect the answer and ask whether another program, a local giveaway or a recycling route is more suitable.
Community benefit: does the recipient need it?
Reuse benefit: is it still safe and usable?
Possible tax benefit: do your recipient, records and tax circumstances qualify?
